Baig appointed Punjab IGP

LAHORE -Finally, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has picked Additional Inspector General of Police, Khan Baig, to lead the country’s largest law enforcing agency as the government on Friday issued the notification, confirming the appointment of Baig as IGP of the Punjab province. 
Earlier, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had recommended to the Federal government the name of Khan Baig, an officer of the 8th Common, who joined the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) as ASP in 1980.  “The notification confirming the appointment of Acting IGP Punjab Khan Baig as Inspector General of Police of the province has been issued,” said an official handout issued from the Central Police Office (CPO) Punjab.
Sources privy to the development disclosed to The Nation that PM Nawaz Sharif had assigned the task of the much-needed police reforms to new IGP, said to be the choice of the Prime Minister. In their campaign manifesto, the PML-N had pledged police reforms in the Punjab province and an end to the thana culture. Police circles revealed that during his posting as Acting (IGP) Punjab, Khan Baig, effectively handled multiple crisis related to law and order situation in various parts of the province. He has been serving on the post of IGP Punjab as acting IGP since May 25, 2013. He had also served as Acting IGP from January 02, 2013 to March 29, 2013.
Profile: Born in 1954, Khan Baig belongs to the Attock district. He did M.Sc in Economics and had joined the police service in 1980. He was promoted to the rank of SP in 1987. In 2011, he was promoted to the rank of Additional Inspector General of Police in Grade-21.
During his service, Khan Baig served on important positions in Karachi and Quetta, apart from various districts of the Punjab province. He also served as RPO Sargodha, DIG Headquarters, and Additional IG Special Branch.
Khan Baig is regarded as a honest, professional, and hardworking police officer in the police service of Pakistan.
