ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) in its meeting on Saturday issued notice to Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro, Judge High Court of Sindh, to appear before the Council on September 26. The SJC that met under the chair of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry decided to give another opportunity to the complainant to appear before the Council on September 26 in the Supreme Court, Islamabad. The Council continued proceedings in the complaint against Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro and noted that the complainant failed to appear before the two-member committee of the SJC on August 17 to substantiate the allegations against him. The SJC summoned the said judge in this case, as well as, another reference, received from the Chief Justice High Court of Sindh, pertaining to manipulation of court record and giving judgement without arguments by the parties counsels. The SJC further considered the complaint filed by SM Ismail against Justice Abdul Shakoor Paracha, former judge Lahore High Court. The SJC, however, noted that meanwhile the said Judge had already sought retirement by tendering resignation to the President, which had been accepted and duly notified by the government of Pakistan. The Council, therefore, decided that no further proceedings would be called for under Article 209 of the Constitution. The Council further decided that after addition of new clause i.e. Clause XI (No Judge of the superior judiciary shall render support in any manner whatsoever, including taking or administering oath in violation of the oath of office prescribed in the Third Schedule to the Constitution, to any authority that acquires power otherwise than through the modes envisaged by the Constitution of Pakistan), a revised Code of Conduct of Judges of the Supreme Court and High Court should be published in the Gazette for information of all concerned. The Council will resume proceedings on September 26 at the Supreme Court, Islamabad. The meeting was also attended by Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, senior SC judges, Justice Tariq Pervez, Chief Justice, Peshawar High Court, Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, Chief Justice, Lahore High Court and Dr Faqir Hussain, Registrar Supreme Court of Pakistan/Secretary Supreme Judicial Council.
