Fake degrees issue NA body not to succumb to govt pressure: Abid

ISLAMABAD - Chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on Education, Abid Sher Ali, has said that the Standing Committee has the authority to start the degree verification of lawmakers and it would follow the process till its completion. Abid Sher Ali made these remarks while talking to media persons after meeting HEC Chairman, Javed Laghari, on Thursday. He said that the Sindh University is not cooperating with the HEC and that he would summon non-cooperating Vice Chancellors to the committee meeting. He said the committee has all the powers to ask the Commission for verification and it would complete the process. Education Minister, Sadar Asif Ahmad Ali, is confused and he should have read the article 66 first before challenging the authority of the committee, he remarked. The committee would not allow the minister to hijack the HEC, he added. He said the commission was still facing immense pressure from the government on the issue of degree verification but the chairman has taken a stand that he would not succumb to pressure and complete the process. He said the meeting of the Committee would be convened after the completion of the verification process.
