SIALKOT - More than 6,000 applicants have been waiting for issuance of computerised registration papers of their vehicles for the last six months due to slackness on the part of the Excise & Taxation Department, Sialkot.

The applicants had deposited as many as Rs20 million as the registration fee collectively. Several people including Khalid Mehmood, Bashir Ahmed, Allah Rakha, Nasir Ali, Muhammad Iqbal, Imran Akbar and Muneer Butt said that there was a monopoly of agents at the offices of the Department due to which the authorities concerned were not issuing these papers. They alleged that the officials of the department had connived with the agents sitting in and around these offices.

They said that six months had passed but they still remained unable to get their computerised registration papers of their vehicles. They alleged that the agents were actually ruling the roost in the office. they added the agents demand heavy amounts for getting the papers issued on urgent basis.

The applicants also alleged that the officials concerned and their staff often remain absent from their seats at the department. When contacted, District Officer Excise & Taxation Department Mushtaq Afridi said that the entry of agents had been banned in the office. He said that several files of record had been stolen from the motor registration branch several months ago due to which there was an inordinate delay in the issuance.
