Asjad stuns Asif to win crown

KARACHI - Unseeded Asjad Iqbal turned the table on the current national champion and top seed M Asif of Punjab by seven frames to four in the final to win the NBP Ranking Snooker crown here on Tuesday at Defence Creek Club. Right from the first to the last 11th frame, Asjad dominated and Asif won only when the unseeded player relaxed after taking invincible lead. Asjad raced to four frames to nil lead winning the frames in convincing manner before Asif got the first break through taking the fifth and sixth frame. However, Asjad once again returned with vengeance to extend his frame lead to five frames to two. For the first time in the eight and ninth frame, Asif showed some glimpses of his being the top seed. His potting and placement of the cue balls was excellent. He won both the frames to trail by five frames to four. However, when Asif was in sight of getting back into the final, Asjad showed tremendous potting clinching the next two frames to win the contest seven frames to four 83-33, 76-31, 84-41(51), 72-51, 42-65, 31-76, 93-01(52), 49-77, 26-89, 73-22, 93-0(59). Asjad won the winner’s purse of Rs 60,000 and Asif earned Rs 35,000. Sultan of Sindh won Rs 5,000 for recording the highest break. Speaking on the occasion, chief of NBP CSR former Test leg spinner Iqbal Qasim announced that the bank might help two youngsters Asjad Iqbal and M Majid Ali get employment in the bank. Prominent amongst those who attended the prize distribution were senior VP of NBP Qamar, PBSA president Alamgir Shaikh and PBSA secretary M Munawwar. APP adds: At the presentation ceremony, SVP National Bank, Qamar Hussain, who was the chief guest, handed over the trophy and cash purse of Rs.70,000 to Asjad Iqbal and cash prize of Rs.35,000 to runner-up Asif.Chief of NBP Sports Division Iqbal Qasim and officials of Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association were also present on the occasion. “It’s definitely a big win for me as Asif is far better cueists than me,” Asjad Iqbal told reporters after his triumph. “My dream is to equal the feats of Yousuf at the national and international level,” he said. “I wanted to get into the footstep of Yousuf to win the Asian and world titles,” he remarked. He said he also wanted to accomplish the break of 147. He complimented senior player Sajjad for his contribution, support and training in his rise.Asjad said it was good feeling to defeat legendary player like Yousuf and senior cueists Asif Toba and Shehram Changezi on the way to win the title.“Its heartening news for me that my pupil Asjad won the title against Asif which was a great achievement,” former Asian number two Sajjad said on telephone from Sargodha.“I could not see him in action in the final because I had to rush back to Sargodha due to some personal problems,” he said. “He (Asjad) was under my training for the past four years and I am delighted with his progress,” he commented. “I taught him English style of game which he adopted it quickly. But I could not master it myself as yet,” two-time National Champion Sajjad said.
