KARACHI - Mayor Wasim Akhtar has said union councils have been given Rs2.5 million for development works and we are ready to provide even Rs25 million had we have more money.

He was talking to media on Tuesday while inspecting the newly constructed 1.25km long road. He also visited the space for the playground and parks along with the MPA Kamran Akhtar, Parliamentary leader in city council Aslam Shah Afridi, UC-31 Chairman Aman Khan Afridi, Chairman of Works and Parks Committee and other officers.

Construction of 5-B road in Baldia Town No 7 was an old demand of the people of the area, play grounds and parks will also be developed in the area along with solving the water scarcity problems in Baldia Town, he added.

The mayor said that this road had been constructed with a cost of Rs20 million and hope that this would solve an old problem of the residents of Baldia Town who were facing acute trouble due to this. He said construction of roads, parks and playgrounds was on priority and the elected representatives are busy in planning such works and completing it in least possible time.

He thanked the chief minister for approving the Safari Theme Park Scheme in Karachi and expressed hope that this project would be completed soon and citizens of Karachi would avail a well standard recreation facility in their city.

Meanwhile, Wasim Akhtar has taken notice over digging of greenbelts and central island by different organisations and departments while leaving the sites as it is after completion of their works within the limit of KMC and made this mandatory for any organization and department to obtain the prior permission from the Parks & Horticulture Department of KMC before digging the green belt or central island for any purpose.

He said the permit holder will have to make payment of the cost of refilling the trenches, pits and also relay the lawn and spreading of manure, leveling and dressing with shifting of plants and trees coming in alignment of the work.

The mayor said that a number of organisations and departments are busy in digging the green belts and central islands causing heavy damage to the horticulture work herbs shrubs. which amounts interference in smooth functioning of Parks and Horticulture Department of KMC as after completion of their work these departments/organizations left the raw material, debris, earth on the sites which gives bad outlook and adversely reflects /creating hindrance and the parks department has to remove defects from its own resources therefore the Parks & Horticulture Department will henceforth issue the permission for such work.

Mayor Karachi said the trees and greenery is essential for any city as it protects from air pollution and adds to the beauty of city roads and central islands. No organization or department should do any such thing that can affect the beauty of the city.

Mayor Karachi said the union council chairmen and the elected representatives of the area were taken on board for development activities and all these works are being done to provide better facilities to people.
