ISLAMABAD (APP) - Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) has set the target of over 56.4 thousand hectare of land to cultivate green chillies production of 104.5 thousand tons in order to full fill domestic requirements. Official sources told APP here Friday that two crops of red chillies are grown in the country during a year, one in Rabi season and other in Khrif seasons. Chillies crop are mainly produced in Sindh Province particularly Therparker areas due to suitable climate for the crop, they added. In the financial year (FY) 2006-07 total area under chilli cultivation was 54.60 thousand hectare while, production achieved was 122.9 thousand tons, they said. They further said informed that the proposed target for the year 2008-09 may be fixed 4 per cent increase as according to the average achievements of last three years. While presenting details of the overall proposed area and production, he informed that 5.4 thousand hectare land with 8.7 thousand tons production was proposed for the Punjab. In Sindh 90.7 thousand tons green chillies will be produced from the 47.3 thousand hectare land, similarly in NWFP and Balochistan 0.6, 3.0 thousand hectare land will put under green chillies cultivation to get 0.7 and 4.4 thousand tons production respectively, he added.
