LAHORE - An accountability court judge Saleem Qureshi Friday while invoking the National Reconciliation Ordinance, acquitted Begum Nusrat Bhutto, widow of former Prime Minster Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother of slain former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, of 1.5 billion-dollar illegal assets reference on her counsel's plea submitted under section 7 of NRO to seek termination of the reference. It may be mention here that Begum Nusrat had never appeared before the court and finally judge Munir Ahmad Sheikh had awarded three years imprisonment to Nusrat Bhutto in absentia on November 18, 2000. The court had issued perpetual arrest warrants for her production in the court and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period. Later another judge Rana Zahid Mehmood, now elevated to LHC, reopened the case in 2007, but after receiving medical evidence that Mrs Bhutto was mentally retarded and unable to recognize anything, the trial court again consigned the file to record. On Friday, Mian Jahangir and Rashid Lodhi advocates who appeared on behalf of Nusrat Bhutto argued that the reference against Mrs Nusrat was the result of political victimization, adding that the reference was fabricated in 1997 during the regime of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He pleaded for termination of the case against Begum Nusrat under NRO 2007. NAB counsel did not oppose the plea and the court terminated the case. According to the prosecution, Nusrat Bhutto is accused of accumulating illegal assets worth $1.5b in UK, France and Switzerland. It may be mentioned here that the court had, earlier, adjourned the hearing in the reference for an indefinite time.
