To make it ‘more meaningful’, govt defers APC

ISLAMABAD   -   The PML-N government has decided to reschedule its proposed national conference on terrorism – originally slated for July 12 – in a bid to make it more meaningful and effective exercise, sources said on Monday.Although Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan cited unavailability of some leaders as basic reason for putting off the conference, parliamentary sources claimed it has been postponed because of reservations of some leaders. Sources said that unless government comes up with concrete plan of action, such an effort would not yield the desired fruits. They maintained that it was about time to devise an action plan rather than wasting time on mere rhetoric as happened in the past.According to the government plan, Army Chief, ISI DG and IB DG would give briefing to the conference on terrorism and challenges to the national security. The government plans to devise counter terrorism strategy in the light of their briefing and in the light of recommendations of the heads of parliamentary parties participating in the conference.“The government does not seem to be serious in tackling the challenge of terrorism. It should have shown some degree of seriousness. It should have issued orders to stop the US drone attacks,” PTI Central Information secretary and MNA Dr Shireen Mazari said.PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who left for United Kingdom on Monday for his medical check up, also doubted seriousness of the government on question of stopping US drone attacks in Fata. Dr Mazari however said that PTI’s central leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak would attend the Conference.Likewise, JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman has also questioned the significance of the conference as his party had also convened a similar conference but government at that time did not take the recommendations seriously. Sources said that PML-Q leadership has also expressed their reservations, pointing out that such conferences were held in the past which failed to produce any result. They want concrete steps by the government, particularly on the issue of stopping the US drone hits, sources added.Sources maintained that interior minister, who has been made focal person of the conference, after his discussion with heads of several parliamentary parties whom he invited to the proposed conference asked the party leadership to reschedule the conference so as to make it more meaningful and effective by ensuring maximum participation of the stakeholders.
