LAHORE - The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday axed former captain Shoaib Malik, wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal and opener Imran Farhat for this month’s limited-overs series in the West Indies, but middle-order bashers Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal were back in the fold.Speaking at the press conference here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday, chief selector Iqbal Qasim said: “It is the best available combination which is capable for attaining desired results in the tour of Caribbean’s.” Also present on the occasion were Pakistan one-day captain Misbahul Haq, T20 skipper M Hafeez and coach Dave Whatmore and other selectors. The selectors made four changes in the one-day team which crashed out of last month’s eight-nation Champions Trophy in England, losing all three games due to sloppy batting. Malik, Kamran and Farhat miserably flopped to perform during the Trophy while Pakistan failed to cross the 170-mark in any of their games. They will play five one-day and two Twenty20 internationals in the Caribbean, with the first one-day match in Guyana on July 14. Misbahul Haq will lead the one-day team while M Hafeez will skipper the Twenty20 side. Qasim said the 16-man one-day and 15-member T20 squads were selected after discussion with the team management. "We have selected separate squads after consultation with Misbah and coach Dav Whatmore and we hope that it will do well," said Qasim. “Changes were imperative after a dismal show of our team in the Champions Trophy and we are confident that the re-called players will justify their inclusion,” he added. Afridi was dropped from the one-day squad twice in the last six months after he failed to impress with both bat and ball but Qasim said the all-rounder had been given one more chance. "We have selected Afridi as per the requirement for the West Indies tour where we need a leg-spinner and he is one of the fittest players," said Qasim. Pakistan one-day squad also has the youthful, uncapped 21-year-old wicketkeeper M Rizwan who is considered a backup of Umar Akmal who is the first choice of the selectors to stand behind the stumps. Opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad also got back his place in the side and this time lady luck smiled on him as he was named in both the squads.“We have included Ahmed based on his performance and we hope that this time he will be a changed person while exhibiting good discipline during the tour,” he added. Qasim justified the inclusion of 34-year-old Zulfiqar Babar, who made his way to the T20 squad after one decade long efforts and performance at domestic level, saying “those who are performing at domestic level stand a fair chance of selection.”The chief selector said all the stake holders including selection committee, captain and the team management would accept the responsibility of victory or defeat of the team in the tour of West Indies as they all were involved in the selection. Paceman Umar Gul remains sidelined after undergoing knee surgery in May. Misbah and T20 skipper M Hafeez said on Wednesday that they would own the good or bad performance of the team in the tour of West Indies and efforts would be made to inspire the team to success in both formats of the game. “The teams for both the formats have been finalised with mutual understanding under a performance based formula focusing on the importance of the tour,” they said. Misbah accepted the responsibility of the team’s debacle in England during the Champions Trophy and attributed the defeat to the failure of the batting order. “There is no doubt that we exhibited poor show in the Champions Trophy and I accept the outcome and I will be accepting the results whatsoever the team will achieve in West Indies.”He defended the selection formation and said the selectors have presented a squad which was a combination of experience and youth eying on 2015 World Cup. “Fresh blood has been inducted in the side keeping in view the future of team and it is a part of its re building for 2015 Cup,” he added. Misbah said young players including Ahmed Shahzad, Umar Amin and Haris Sohail have made a comeback and expressed the confidence that they would be a vital part of the team by excelling in their respective departments. “I am confident that the young players will be in keen and healthy competition with the senior players and by that way they will be able to contribute in elevating team's overall performance,” he added. “We have a good track record whenever we played in Caribbean and hopes are high and morale is up for achieving productive results this time too,” he claimed. “We will be taking into consideration the nature of wicket before every game to decide our final playing eleven as we will be aiming victory. Based on the performance of Shoaib Malik, there is no place for him in the team and Shahid Afridi has been included as an all-rounder.”He pointed out that the fitness level of players was not at the level where it must be as they lacked far behind international players who had higher level of fitness. “We will try to improve the fitness level of our players and help them to perform to best of their abilities,” Misbah added.T20 captain M Hafeez said it was not fair to conclude about the performance of players on the basis of their appearance in two to three matches. “There is a dire need to give ample chance to every player regardless to his failure in few games.”“It is a sour reality that our performance touched a low standard in the Champions Trophy but we are looking into the tour of West Indies with high hopes as all the players are determined to improve their performance,” he added. Commenting on his own performance, Hafeez said: “He always tries to justify his inclusion in all the three formats of the game and it is always his utmost desire to put up good performance and under his captaincy, the team’s ranking has been improved.” ODI SQUAD: Misbahul Haq (capt), M Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shahzad, Asad Shafiq, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Umar Amin, Haris Sohail, M Irfan, Asad Ali, Junaid Khan, Wahab Riaz, M Rizwan, Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman. T20 SQUAD: M Hafeez (capt), Ahmed Shahzad, Nasir Jamshed, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Haris Sohail, Hammad Azam, Sohail Tanveer, Wahab Riaz, Asad Ali, M Irfan, Junaid Khan, Umar Amin, Saeed Ajmal and Zulfiqar Babar.
