PM Shehbaz hails armed forces' victory in Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, confirms six Indian jets downed

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives in defense of the nation during a Youm-e-Tashakur (Thanksgiving Day) ceremony held in Islamabad to celebrate the successful completion of Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz revealed that Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar informed him that the Pakistan Air Force had downed six Indian fighter jets during the recent confrontation, revising the earlier count of five. He noted that the destroyed aircraft included advanced Rafale jets and drones.

The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by opening remarks, a flypast, and national songs. The Prime Minister, attending as the chief guest, was joined by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, service chiefs, federal cabinet members, foreign diplomats, and other dignitaries.

During his address, Shehbaz Sharif recounted the timeline of the conflict, stating that during India’s attack, both civilians and soldiers embraced martyrdom. He recalled a critical moment on the night of May 9 when the army chief informed him of Indian missile strikes on Pakistani airports and sought approval for a strong retaliatory response.

He said Pakistan’s counterattack targeted locations such as Pathankot and Udhampur, forcing the enemy to seek a ceasefire. “General Asim Munir later informed me that after our response, the enemy had offered a ceasefire, which I approved,” the Prime Minister shared.

Calling May 10 a historic moment for the country, Shehbaz Sharif said the entire nation stood united behind the armed forces. “We gave a clear message to the world that Pakistan is fully prepared to defend itself,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister also extended his gratitude to allied nations for their support, specifically thanking U.S. President Donald Trump for what he termed courageous efforts for peace in the region.

Across the country, Youm-e-Tashakur was observed with special prayers, Quranic recitations, and ceremonial gun salutes — 31 in Islamabad and 21 in provincial capitals. A commemorative event at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam in Karachi saw Corps Commander Lt Gen Awais Dastagir lay a floral wreath and offer Fateha in honor of the Father of the Nation.
