Shah Mahmood shifted to hospital due to cardiac pain

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was shifted from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) early Saturday after experiencing chest pain, his lawyer confirmed.

Qureshi reportedly felt discomfort following Fajr prayers, prompting jail authorities to initiate a medical check-up and transfer him to PIC for further evaluation and treatment. He is currently under observation, and the extent of his condition has not yet been officially disclosed.

His family has been informed of the development. Zain Qureshi, his son, confirmed that immediate medical attention was provided and requested prayers for his father’s recovery. Meanwhile, Qureshi’s daughter, Meher Bano, posted on social media that her father remains under observation and thanked supporters for their concern.

Qureshi has been in custody since his arrest linked to the May 9, 2023 riots following the detention of PTI founder Imran Khan. He is facing multiple charges, including alleged involvement in the attack on Lahore’s Shadman police station. In July 2024, an anti-terrorism court indicted him in that case.

He was transferred from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore the same month, reportedly due to logistical issues related to his court appearances. Qureshi has pleaded not guilty to all charges and continues to maintain that the cases are politically motivated.
