The federal government is working on a new scheme to provide energy saver fans to electricity consumers on easy, interest-free installments in a bid to reduce energy consumption and electricity bills, sources revealed on Monday.
According to sources, the initiative has received the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is expected to be officially announced in the upcoming federal budget.
The scheme, aimed at promoting energy efficiency, will allow consumers to acquire energy-saving DC fans with support from banks. The cost of the fans will be repaid through easy monthly installments added to consumers’ electricity bills.
Sources estimate that replacing conventional AC fans with energy-efficient DC fans could save up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide.
“The government is considering offering the fans on zero-interest loans to ensure affordability,” the sources added. They also confirmed that the plan will be discussed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of broader energy sector reforms.
The move is expected to significantly lower electricity bills for consumers while easing the load on the national power grid.
