PM under pressure after Panama Papers leaks: Imran

CHITRAL - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday said that the accountability of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was necessary for eliminating corruption from the country.

Speaking to media persons after a ceremony was held for cheque distribution of royalty income received from Markhor hunting, during his visit to Chitral, he claimed that Nawaz Sharif’s assets abroad prove that he is involved in corruption and money laundering.

He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is in London because he cannot handle pressure after Panama Papers revelations. PML-N govt is trying to save Nawaz Sharif through Terms of Reference (TORs) of their own choice, he added.

PTI chief said that suspects facing corruption charges should also be released from jails if the Prime Minister is not held accountable.

Pakistan will be saved and poverty will end if action is taken against PM as law is equal for everyone, he said.

Imran Khan said that all Opposition parties agreed on one point that accountability should be held against Prime Minister and his family involved in Panama leaks, otherwise, accountability against other corrupt people should not be held.  The PTI chief said that Pakistan will change if there was accountability of the Prime Minister.

He said the PTI would keep the Opposition united on one point of accountability of Mian Nawaz Sharif.

He, however, said that if the Opposition did not support the PTI, they would continue their campaign against the Prime Minister and if needed they would also come on the streets.

It may be mentioned here that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif underwent an open heart surgery in London on May 31. It was the 66-year-old Prime Minister’s second major cardiac medical procedure in five years.

The Prime Minister insists his family has done "nothing wrong", stating that the claims had been investigated twice, decades ago, under the tenure of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
