Babar, Rizwan left out as PCB announces squads for Tri-Series and Asia Cup 2025

LAHORE  -  The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced a 17-member national squad for the UAE Tri-Series and the Asia Cup 2025, retaining all-rounder Salman Ali Agha as captain.

The Tri-Series, featuring Pakistan, Afghanistan, and hosts UAE, is scheduled from August 29 to September 7 in Sharjah, followed by the Asia Cup 2025 from September 9 to 28 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The squad features experienced campaigners Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf, alongside young talents Saim Ayub, Khushdil Shah, and Hussain Talat. Other inclusions are Muhammad Nawaz, Muhammad Wasim Jr., Muhammad Haris, Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Mirza, and Sufyan Moqim.

During the post-announcement press conference, Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson justified the inclusion of pacer Salman Mirza, citing his remarkable recent form. “We have retained Salman Mirza because of his performance in Bangladesh,” said Hesson.

The 31-year-old speedster had turned heads with a superb performance in the Bangladesh series, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker. Mirza bagged seven wickets in three matches at an impressive economy rate of 5.21, underlining his ability to deliver both breakthroughs and control in the middle overs.

The squad announcement, however, drew attention for the exclusion of seasoned stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, both of whom last featured in T20Is against South Africa in December 2024.Speaking to reporters, chief selector Aqib Javed clarified that the doors remain open for the prolific duo. “There’s no full stop on any player. Performances and strike rates are key in T20 cricket. If they deliver, they’ll be back. Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, and Fakhar Zaman are recent examples of players who seized their opportunities,” Aqib explained.

The former pacer emphasised the importance of Pakistan’s emerging pool of players, citing the Pakistan Shaheens program and domestic competitions. “Options are improving, players like Yasir Khan, Naeem, and Khawaja Nafay are knocking on the door, which is a very positive sign for our cricket,” he added.

Looking ahead, Aqib Javed expressed optimism about Pakistan’s chances in the important clash against India. “Pakistan-India games are always special. I truly believe this squad has the potential to beat any side, including India. We must place our full trust in them and extend all-out support, as this will lift their morale and enable them to deliver their best,” he asserted.
