Shawwal moon not to sight today

LAHORE-There is hardly any chance of sighting of the Shawwal moon on Tuesday. Eidul Fitr, therefore, will be celebrated on October 2 (Thursday), meteorological experts opine. The experts say that none of the three conditions of sighting of the new moon is fulfilled on Tuesday and as such the holy month of Ramazan will be of 30 days. 'There are three essential values for sighting of the new moon: firstly, its life should be more than 12 hours at the time of sunset, secondly, the new moon should stay at least for 41 minutes after sunset, thirdly, it should be over 9 degree above the horizon. All these three conditions should be fulfilled for the sighting of new moon. As none of these condition will be fulfilled on Tuesday (today), Eidul Fitr will be celebrated on Thursday', said meteorological expert Shaukat Ali Awan. AFP adds: Eidul Fitr festivities will be celebrated on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya and Jordan, officials said. Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia said that the new moon had been sighted and that Ramazan ends on Monday with the feast to follow the next day. Lebanon and Jordan made similar announcements. But Libya - where the Eid will be celebrated today - uses astronomical calculations against other Mideast countries which follow the lunar calendar . In Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates there was no immediate confirmation that the new moon had been sighted, but generally they follow Saudi Arabia's cue.
