Time to rise above party politics on Balochistan: Nisar

Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday advised the government and all political parties to rise above politics and work jointly for ending sense of deprivation among the people of Balochistan. This he said while initiating the discussion on Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan in the special joint sitting of the Parliament, here. The package was presented by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in the joint sitting of the Parliament on November 24. Ch Nisar said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz stance on the Balochistan issue was very clear and it believes that the package is about the area, people and political parties of Balochistan and it was their prerogative to express their opinions on the matter. He was of the opinion that during Musharraf era Balochs were murdered mercilessly on directions of the then dictator. He appreciated the government for its good intentions to resolve the problems of the province. However, he said that government should have come up with a package within months after it had come into power. Chaudhry Nisar termed the package too small a prescription for a chronic disease of deprivation of the rights of the people. "Unfortunately we did not learn any lessons from the mistakes of the past and always pointed guns at those who demanded their rights", he added. He said there was no doubt about the good intentions of the present government, but only good intentions would not deliver. For ending over 60 years sense of deprivation, non-conventional and revolutionary steps would have to be taken. He said that there were over 800 missing persons in Balochistan, but so far only a few have been traced. He advised the government not to go for voting on the package rather take it back to the stakeholders and start its earliest implementation. The PML-N leader said that the government should open back door talks channel with those who differ with the government policies. Ch Nisar suggested that general amnesty should be announced for all Balochs against whom various cases were pending. He also said that military operations were not the solution of the problems.
