LAHORE The MQM is focusing on local leadership of Punjab to bring them into the partys fold as this formula will help seat adjustments with other political forces in the next polls and Southern Punjab will become the power-base of MQM, revealed Dr Farooq Sattar on Friday. MQM coordination committee deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar made these revelations while talking about the partys strategy in Punjab in an exclusive chat with TheNation. He told the MQM was trying to bring nazmeen, who were part of district government system, into their party at the level of towns, tehsils and union councils. Elaborating his strategy in the province, he said grabbing support of two union councils meant winning one seat in the provincial assembly. He said the party was in contact with the leaders of movement for restoring Bahawalpur province notably Nawab Salah-ud-Din Abbasi. They had also experienced good working relations with the PML-Q, he added. Sattar said the MQM leadership had witnessed great mobilisation of the party activities in southern parts of the province, however, it was struggling hard to get support in remaining parts of Punjab as well. They wanted to create partys 'political base consisting of local leadership, he revealed. Farooq told that third tier leadership of the PPP, the PML-N and the PML-Q had joined the party from across the province, most of them ex-nazims. The party was focusing on small farmers to bring them in a position wherein they could bargain with big political groups consisting of landlords, Sattar said. He said the MQM was the third political option for the masses which had started the process of bringing 'inactive or sidelined political leaders into their party. This would complete after the MQMs April 10 public moot, he opined. While terming Punjab a 'big challenge for the MQM, he said they were devising a comprehensive plan to reach out to 'undecided and young voters besides independent small pockets of influence for getting their support.
