US prosecutors seek solid evidence

ISLAMABAD The Legal and Prosecution Department of the United States has asked National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to provide more solid evidence, which may lead to extradite Hamesh Khan, the main accused in Bank of Punjab (BoP) Rs 9 billion scam, well-placed sources informed TheNation on Friday. In this connection, an emergence meeting was held here at Foreign Office on Thursday last to discuss how solid evidence could be provided to the US. All the solid evidence will be presented before the Manhattan Criminal Court, which will precede the case against Hamesh on 17th February in New York. Legal Director of Foreign Office Sher Bahadur Khan, a senior official of Interior Ministry, DG (Operations) NAB Kausar Khan, FIA Legal Director Azam Khan, Legal Advisor BoP, Mohsin Ranjha, and Mr Sajjad of BoP attended the meeting. Attorney General of the United States and Manhattan Criminal Court separately sent letters to Pakistani authorities seeking solid evidence against the accused so that the court could decide the case in the light of both parties arguments. The sources also disclosed that Mohsin Ranjha told the participants that the property of Sheikh Afzal, another central character in BoP case, would be shifted to Pakistan from Malaysia with the completion of legal process going on in Kuala Lumpur. Ranjha also told the authorities that the property of the accused (Afzal) in UAE would also be brought back to Pakistan within weeks, the sources further revealed. The sources informed that Sher Bahadur Khan told the participants that Foreign Office would provide another lawyer to NAB for legal aid, which may result early departure of Hamesh. Pakistan Embassy in Washington, if needed, will help in the whole process being taken up by the federal jury of the state, an official who attended the meeting told this scribe on the condition of anonymity. The FIA high-ups also extended their services to Foreign/ Interior Ministries to approach the matter through proper channel, the sources further informed. Meanwhile, Khawaja Haris, lawyer of BoP, was of the view that the Foreign Office would make fresh efforts with the coordination of DG Interpol and prominent lawyers who had gripped over international laws. About the extradition of Hamesh, the DG FIA talked with the Secretary General of Interpol in USA about the arrest of Hamesh, the sources claimed, adding that Hussain Haqqani, Ambassador of Pakistan to US, raised the issue with US officials for resolving the matter through Interpol. The sources also informed that action against officials, who had helped them flee the country, was on the cards now. It is worth mentioning here that Hamesh Khan was the president of BoP when he helped the owner of Haris Steel Mills to get Rs 9 billion loans from the bank.
