Edhi Centre ordered to produce baby boy

LAHORE - Justice Khalil Ahmad of the Lahore High Court has directed Edhi Welfare Centre, Lahore to produce a suckling baby boy in the court on August 15 whom his father had abandoned at Township centre after having a quarrel with his wife. The judge also directed the petitioner to provide a return air ticket to Edhi's official to bring the baby back from their Karachi head office. The judge passed this order on a habeas corpus filed by Sana Butt, a resident of Rana Town, Shahdara, seeking recovery of her six-month son Usman Butt from the custody of Edhi Welfare. The petitioner submitted that she married Imran Butt three years ago and had a child. She said she had a quarrel with her husband who, with a view to take revenge on her, snatched the minor from her and took away to some unknown place. She said she with the help of her relatives left no stone unturned to trace the whereabouts of her suckling baby but all in vain. One day, she said, her husband Imran came to home and disclosed that he had handed over the child to Edhi Welfare Centre, Township. The petitioner said she approached the Edhi officials for the return of her child but they did not cooperate with her. They prolonged the matter on one or the other pretext and ultimately they refused to return the child. She said the minor was a suckling baby and desperately needs love and lap of mother and if he is not recovered and handed over to her, there is a possibility of his death due to improper care and food. She, therefore, she prayed to the court to direct the Edhi administration to produce the child before the court and hand him over to her. On court's directions, administrator Edhi Centre Township appeared before the court on Tuesday and said as the child had been sent to Karachi head office so it was difficult for them to identify the petitioner's baby among thousands of abandoned children living over there. At this the judge angrily asked the female administrator that there must be a mechanism to identify the children living in Edhi centre and directed her to produce the child before the court on Monday. Reply sought from CM's political secy The Lahore High Court admitting a petition for regular hearing directed Punjab Chief Minister's political secretary Qamar-uz-Zaman to explain as under what law he directed the police to register a criminal case against the petitioner. The court also called report from other respondents by October 10. Petitioner Yousaf Shahzad contended that he had contested election from PP-154, Lahore against a candidate of PML-N. He said CM's political secretary was victimising and directed the police to register an FIR against him. He said though the police had not registered the case so far but was harassing and threatening him illegally, he added. He, therefore, prayed to the court to direct the respondents to act in accordance with the law and asked them under what authority they were taking actions against him.
