Local quartet in Pakistan Open Squash main draw

ISLAMABAD - Amjad Khan, Waqar Mehboob, Aqib Hanif and Danish Atlas Khan reached the main draw of the Pakistan Open Squash Championship after winning the qualifying round. The main round is scheduled to be played from Tuesday (today) at Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad. The championship is pursuing prize money of US$ 30, 000, as it was originally event of worth US$ 85, 000. Top ranking squash players of the world skipped from the championship after the Marriott Hotel incident, which claimed over 60 lives, on September 20 this year 2008. Now, world number 29, Farhan Mehboob is the top seed player of the Pakistan Open, as his cousin Aamir Atlas Khan is at the second spot in the international tournament seeding. The Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) has awarded wild card entry to Nasir Iqbal in this championship, as he will face Aamir Atlas Khan in his opening fixture of the prestigious event. Overseas players, which are in a meager number, have been provided full security. As the security has also been beefed up at the Mushaf squash Complex and dozens of security people deployed around the complex. Foreigner players have been given accommodation at the Officers Mess, Pakistan Air Headquarters, Islamabad, said a source. Federal Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Hussain Shah will grace the opening ceremony as chief guest at 4p.m and Aamir Atlas Khan will take on Nasir Iqbal in the fixture of the Pakistan Open. The main-round of the women's event will start at 1100 hours at the same venue. It is important to mention here that Amjid Khan had won the title of Pakistan Open for his country last time in 1998 at Karachi. President Pakistan Squash Federation Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mehmood Ahmed said at this occasion that the federation was considering taking action against the top national players, who wrote to Professional Squash Association against the national coach. He said that he was not in favour of taking a prompt and stern action against the discipline violators and matter would also be taken for the consideration in the light of performance of players and coaches. The PSF chief said that federation was planning to call a meeting of its members after the Pakistan Open Championship in which the performance of everybody would be measured.
