Rallies uncalled for, says PML-Q leader

LAHORE - PML-Q Parliamentary Leader in Punjab Assembly Ch Zaheeruddin said here on Thursday that there was no need for holding public rallies at the moment, as there was no constitutional crisis in the country to give a call to the public to come to the roads. You dont need to spend millions of rupees on the banners and flags to bring people on the road. When the situation got worse for them they themselves would take to the street, he observed while speaking at TheNation Forum. He said people in Lahore were dying of dengue, while students and lady health workers were on roads due to bad governance. Under such circumstances, he added, chief minister Punjab should pay attention on improving governance instead of staging protest rallies. Zaheer accused Shahbaz Sharif of promoting extremism in politics. He said that dengue, dacoits and inapt policies of Shahbaz government were the real issues facing the people of Punjab, but Nawaz party was trying to divert peoples attention from these problems by resorting to protest rallies. Zaheer said his party was against the politics of confrontation and protests. He lamented that banners earlier displayed on main City roads to spread awareness about dengue virus, have now been replaced with those inscribed with slogans of Go-Zardari-Go. He said over 500 deaths caused by dengue was a matter of grave concern. Disagreeing with chief ministers contention that dengue was a natural calamity, Ch Zaheer said that the virus had spread due to spurious insecticide used for fumigation and governments failure to take remedial measures at the appropriate time. Talking about the issue of new province for south Punjab, Zaheer said that PML-N should honour the words of its President Mian Nawaz Sharif and support a resolution in Punjab Assembly moved by the joint opposition asking the federal government to amend the Constitution for the purpose. He also demanded holding of local elections, saying that it was job of the councillors to deal with the issues of construction of drains, pavement of streets and to facilitate people for resolution of their disputes in Thanas and Kachehris. He said he had submitted a resolution in the Assembly demanding handing over of the subjects of law and order, health, education, development work, sanitation and clean drinking water to the local governments. The PML-Q leader opposed giving MFN status to India without getting similar concessions from other side. He also criticised America for not supporting UN resolutions on Kashmir. Ch Zaheer on this occasion paid rich tributes to Editor-in-Chief, TheNation and Nawa-i-Waqt, Majid Nizami for supporting Kashmir cause and making new generation imbibe the teachings of Allama Iqbal and Quaid-i-Azam.
