ISLAMABAD - The government would privatise as many as 17 national profitable assets including Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and Qadirpur Gas Fields (QGF) during the current fiscal year, Minister for Privatisation Syed Naveed Qamar told the National Assembly Thursday. In a written reply to a question of Raja Muhammad Safdar Khan, the Minister said that 17 units including Hazara Phosphate Fertilizer Limited, Heavy Electrical Complex, Small Medium Enterprises Bank, National Power Construction Company, Jamshoro Power Company Ltd, Kot Addu Power Company, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, Printing Corporation of Pakistan Press, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, Pakistan Machine Tool Factory, MORAFCO Industries Ltd, Sindh Engineering Co Ltd, OGDCL Qadirpur Gas Fields, Larkana Coal Mining Project, Khewra Salt Mines, Pakistan Steel Mills and Services International Hotel. Answering to supplementary question of Fauzia Wahab, Naveed Qamar said Habib Bank Ltd was privatised to the highest bidder namely Agha Khan Fund for Economic Development for Rs 22.409 billion for 51 per cent shares of the bank. He said the process of privatisation would be very transparent and in that regard PPP government would take the Parliament into confidence. Answering to another question, Parliamentary Secretary of Commerce Noor Alam told the House that Pakistan didn't sign Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. He said Pakistan had signed FTA with Sri Lanka, Iran, Indonesia, China, Malaysia and other countries. He said Pakistan had entered into a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Iran on March 4, 2004, which had been operational since September 1, 2006. Recently, Pakistan also signed a comprehensive FTA with Malaysia including bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation, he said, adding the agreement had become operational on January 1, 2008. Advisor on Interior Rehman Malik told the National Assembly that as many as 10,534 cases were registered regarding crime against women. While replying to a question, he said that a total of 3,236 women were killed from 2005 to 2007. He said 1,019 women were killed under the cover of honour killing, 1,931 were forcedly raped, acid was thrown on 53 women, 45 were burnt when their cooking stoves blew up and 4,250 maids were tortured. He also told the House that four bilateral, trilateral and quadrilateral working groups had been established in order to control the ever-increasing menace of human trafficking. In a written rely to a question, he said four groups including Pak-Oman Bilateral, Pak-Turkey Bilateral, Pak-UK-UAE Trilateral and Pak-Iran-Turkey-Greece Quadrilateral had been established. He said UK, France, Oman, Afghanistan and India also joined as observer. He said that as many as 14,530 people were deported during 2008 while 24,555 in the year 2005, 14,300 in 2006 and 12,371 in 2007 were deported.
