Strike paralyses Balochistan

QUETTA - At least 25 people suffered injuries when a bomb exploded at a public meeting in Dera Allah Yar on Tuesday while 20-inche diameter gas pipeline and three power pylons were also blown up in Dera Bugti. According to reports reaching here, the activists of Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP-Aali) gathered in Dera Allah Yar to hold a public meeting in connection with Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti's second death anniversary when explosive material attached with  a motorbike parked close to public meeting by unknown persons exploded with a huge bang. As a result, 25 people received serious wounds. The injured were immediately rushed to Dera Allah Yar hospital for treatment. Condition of seven injured persons was stated to be critical. They were shifted to Jacobabad hospital. Soon after the explosion, law enforcement agencies personnel reached the site and cordoned off the area. According to police, the explosive device was locally made and it was used through remote control. Police have registered a case against unknown persons and started investigation. Meanwhile, Dera Allah Yar police have claimed to have foiled a bid of terrorism in the area by defusing a 58-kg bomb planted by unknown felons near JWP office. According to reports emanating from Dera Bugti, miscreants blew up a 20-inch diameter gas pipeline and fired several rockets at security forces checkposts. Police said, unknown armed persons had planted explosive device under the foundation of 20-inch diameter gas pipeline in Dera Bugti. The explosive went off and damaged gas pipeline, due to which gas supply to some areas of the country was suspended. Three power pylons were also blown up in Dasht Goran area, causing suspension of electricity in many areas. In yet another incident, unknown armed persons fired several rockets at a check post of security forces in Karmo Wadh area. The rockets landed near the checkpost and exploded with big bang. However, no loss of life and property was reported in rocket attack. Police have registered separate cases and started investigation. Meanwhile, shutter-down and wheel-jam strike were observed on Tuesday across Balochistan on the eve of second death anniversary of Nawab Akbar Bugti who was killed in August 26, 2006 in military operation in Kohlu district. The strike call was given by Baloch National Front (BNF), Baloch Republican Party (BRP) and Jamoori Watan Party (JWP). The strike call was supported by all political and nationalists parties of Balochistan including, Balochistan National Party (Mengal), Pashtoon Khawa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), Awami National Party, transporters, traders and Balochistan Bar Association and people belonging to different segments of life. In Quetta, all the major business centres and markets remained closed throughout the day. All main roads of the city including Jinnah Road, Liaquat Bazar, Sariab Road and Zarghoon Road wore a deserted look. The transport on roads of city was very thin. However, there was complete wheel-jam on the highways of Balochistan. The government had already announced holiday in educational institutions due to which all educational institutions remained closed. The attendance of government employees was also low in other government offices. Heavy contingents of police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed at all important and sensitive places of the city to maintain law and order. However, some protestors erected hurdles on the road and pelted stones on police mobile at the Hazarganji area. Police personnel fired shells on mob and dispersed them. Besides this incident, no other untoward incident was reported from any part of Quetta city. According to reports reaching from other towns of Balochistan, business activities and transport also remained totally paralysed in other parts of the province, including Nushki, Kharan, Sibi, Kohlu, Khuzdar, Mastung, Kalat, Bolan, Turbat and Panjgur.
