India to build cricket stadium in Kandahar

KANDAHAR- The Government of India has agreed on a grant of $1 million to construct a cricket stadium in southern Afghanistan in the province of Kandahar, stated in the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) media release.

The stadium will be built in Aino Mina in Kandahar City on 44 acres of donated land, said Shahzada Massoud, the ACB Chairman. The building of the new stadium is the "result of discussions that have taken place over the past two year."

"The land was donated by Mahmood Karzai, brother of President Hamid Karzai, to Afghanistan Cricket Board in 2012."

Along with the announcement of the approved grant, the Government of India stated that, "this was a project that ACB has been closely following with us and we will be working with them to have the work started on this important project at the earliest."

Massoud said that the stadium project will benefit Afghanistan and "would be a good host for the region and Asian cricket competitions."

ACB officials have said the stadium will improve cricket in Afghanistan. They also added that they are trying to build such stadiums in other provinces likes eastern Khost, Paktia and Kunar.
