ISLAMABAD - Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari has said that post-2014 situation is extremely important for Afghanistan and the whole region, and global community needs to deal with the new emerging scenario cautiously to ensure long-lasting peace in Afghanistan.
He said that Pakistan wanted peace and stability in the region as violent extremism and terrorism had inflicted losses much beyond calculations. He expressed these views while talking to Senator Salma Ataullahjan and Senator Nancy Ruth, members of the Canadian Senate, during a meeting at Parliament House here on Monday.
“We have suffered a lot and we need global support to root out the menace of terrorism from our soil,” the chairman remarked during the meeting. He underscored the need for enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Canada in different sectors including defence and security and to learn from each other’s experiences.
Regarding Pakistan-Canada bilateral relations, the chairman observed that Pakistan placed relationship with Canada in high esteem and desired to expand the ties for mutual benefit of the people of the two sides. He said that parliamentarians could play a crucial role in this regard.
Senator Salma Ataullahjan informed the chairman Senate about the purpose of her visit. She said that Pakistan-Canada Friendship group was playing active role in bringing the two countries closer. Senator Nancy Ruth expressed the satisfaction over her visit to Pakistan.
Both sides also discussed matters of mutual interests. Chairman Senate informed the Canadian parliamentarians about the role and functions of the Senate, election procedure and composition of the Senate besides the number of seats allocated for women and non-Muslims.
Members of the Canadian Senate also apprised the chairman Senate about Canadian Senate, its election process and functions.
