ICC chief satisfied with arrangements

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE - President International Cricket Council (ICC) Ray Mali said here Tuesday that the ICC Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament must be played at the soil of Pakistan and the Asia Cup would be a test case as the ICC's first fixture commences from June 24 at Lahore. Talking to reports here at Islamabad International Airport along with Dr. Nasim Ashraf, Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), he said that PCB was a good organiser of the international event. "I hope everything will be clear before the start of ICC Champions Trophy which will be played at three centers including Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi," he said. He said that Pakistan would host Asia Cup prior to Champions Trophy and everything would be open after this regional cricket event of six nations. "The arrangement are looking in good shape and the PCB will stage both the competitions in positive manners which will benefit the promotion of cricket in the region," he said. Mali further said the Twenty20 cricket game would not damage Test cricket. "The shortest cricket version came out from Test cricket and the value of this version cannot be decreased. Also, the ICC will play its role to keep alive the Test cricket thought its Future Tour Program (FTP)," he replied another question. Meanwhile, Nasim said that it was great honour for the PCB that the president ICC himself came to Pakistan for participating the lunching ceremony of Asia Cricket Cup. "The 14-man delegation is satisfied over the arrangements of PCB to organise Asia Cup and ICC Champions Trophy this year," he added. Ashraf said that the victory against India in the final of tri-national was the result of teamwork. "Our team entered into the ground with game plan and every player toiled hard to overcome India. Boys were also physically fit and they produced remarkable performance to win the title that boosted the moral of the whole team, "he concluded. ICC official praises progress Earlier, the seven-member ICC delegation led by its president Ray Mali arrived here on Tuesday morning to assess the arrangements at the three main venues of the Champions Trophy. The delegation is visiting Rawalpindi and Karachi and . The ICC President will also be meeting with the Interior Ministry official, who will brief him about the security arrangements during the Champions Trophy. Later in the evening today the ICC officials will unveil the Champions Trophy. The ICC chief executive and two other senior officials will arrive here for the trophy unveiling function today. Dr Nasim Ashraf received Ray Mali at the airport and later Mali visited the Gaddafi Stadium and the National Cricket Academy. Shafqat Naghmi said Mali was impressed by the academy facilities. He said that Mali recalled his earlier visit to the academy when there was nothing but now he was pleased to see the cricketers practicing in the academy. ICC Manager Communication Sami-ul Hasan said that the progress on arrangements for Champions Trophy are going according to plans and there have been no apprehensions from any team for participating in the mini World Cup. Talking to journalists, the ICC official said that the visit of the ICC officials is part of a series of inspection the ICC holds before any major event. "It's a routine visit of the ICC delegation before any major event it holds in any country," he said. Sami said that the Champions Trophy will be held in time and there won't be any change of schedule. "The ICC chief executive meeting will be held on June 29 to July 4 and the reaming issues will be finalised during that meeting," he said. He further stated that he does not want to talk hypothetically about the holding of the event. "The PCB has assured of all kind of arrangements and the ICC is working very closely with the PCB," he added. Sami said that the PCB was holding the event at three best venues of the country. "The teams have been divided into two groups and in 18 days 15 matches will be played and there will be high class competition to watch from day one," he added. He further said that cricket operations, management, advertisement officials meeting would be held during the ICC officials stay here. "The trophy will be launched at 4 pm followed by press briefing and before that the officials will visit Rawalpindi and later go to Karachi to see the progress of work and hold meetings with the relevant officials. Champions Trophy unveiling The ICC delegation reached Lahore to attend function of display of Champions Trophy. Chairman PCB has received the delegation that comprised ICC President Ray Mali, acting CEO David Ritcheson, Manager Communication Samiul Hasan and others. The unveiling ceremony of ICC Champions Trophy would be held today. Dr. Nasim while talking to media said that they were are glad to receive ICC president in Pakistan. He said that the Champions Trophy would be held in September. During the stay in Pakistan it will attend the launching ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy, to be held on June 18 in Lahore, and also review the arrangements of the event. Besides president Ray Mali and chief executive David Richardson, the ICC delegation includes the representatives of its departments of commercial, event management, sponsorship, broadcast, pitches and media. They will review the arrangements related to their departments. The delegation reviewed the arrangements of the launching ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Pakistan Cricket Board secretariat and then visited the Gaddafi Stadium . Dr Nasim Ashraf said that it was a matter of great pride for the country that the ICC president had arrived here for the unveiling of the ICC Champions Trophy.   Mali said that so far no team has shown reservation in playing the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
