Free, fair polls in tribal belt at all costs: Governor

KHYBER AGENCY - The government will leave no stone unturned to conduct free and fair elections in the tribal regions. This was stated by Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Engineer Shaukatullah in a day-long visit to Landi Kotal while addressing a grand tribal here on Thursday.
Governor said that government has not commenced any dialogue with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), however, the government would welcome jirga steps to establish peace in the Fata during elections.
Regarding security risks in area, the governor said that the law and order situation had much improved in the Khyber as compared to previous years. 
He said for the first time party-based elections is going to be conducted in the Fata which should be made a role model for the coming generations.
He said the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) was one of the challenges being faced by the government. He urged the tribesmen to join hands with the government for their rehabilitation.
The governor asked the election candidates to  discourage the government employees taking part in elections campaigns.
He urged the candidates to cooperate with the Election Commission to conduct free and fair elections. He said that separate polling booths would be installed for the Waziristan, Khyber and Orakzai agencies’ displaced persons in the areas and camps. The governor showed concerns over the security check posts established on the Peshawar-Torkham Highway, saying that the check posts were misused and were being used for VESTED interests.
He vowed that some unimportant check posts would soon be dismantled to provide relief to local tribesmen. Directions have been issued to the departments concerned to expedite the construction work on Jamrud Grid Station and on Peshawar-Torkham Road.
The governor directed the Education Department officials to send him the list of destroyed schools to repair it on the first priority and stressed upon the tribesmen to ensure presence of teachers in schools. Engineer Shaukatullah Khan asked political agent Khyber, Mutahir Zeb, to release the prisoners involved in petty crimes. The KPK governor urged the media to play their important role and produce the soft image of Fata. He said that media should promote healthy activities and development schemes under going in the Fata.
He also announced to include Landi Kotal and Jamrud press clubs in the annual ADP. Governor also directed the ACS Fata Dr Tashfeen to submit him a report on the Shelman Water Supply scheme to review it if it could be initiated again. Six tube-wells would be established  in Landi Kotal and would be provided solar system shortly to meet water needs of the people in the area.  Governor said that if anybody had reservations over transfer of the returning officer from Landi Kotal to Jamrud  they should submit application with the Election Commission in this regard.
Meanwhile, Landi Kotal press members protested against the discriminatory behaviour of the political administration of Khyber Agency for not allowing the tribal journalists to sit in the briefing being given to the governor by the heads of various departments.
Tribal journalists expressed dissatisfaction over ignoring them. Governor KPK also gave Rs0.6 millions to the tribal jirga participants.
