Printers cash in on wedding season boom

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Printers in the city are struggling to cope with burgeoning demand as their business rolls through its annual peak with the onset of the wedding season immediately before and after the Eid. "The business in our market has ascended 500 percent due to the upcoming mega wedding season," said Muhammad Jameel, owner of printers of wedding cards. "Now the shops printing wedding cards remain open till late night due to the increased number of orders and frequent visits by the customers", Express TV reported. Centres for printing wedding cards in the city are now working extra hours to meet increased demand. The wedding card business normally starts picking up before Ramazan and continues till after Eid, as Shawal is traditionally the peak wedding month. "On the occasion of Eid, people frequently visit their relatives and it is the best opportunity to invite them for a wedding," said Faisal Ahmad, owner of a printers.   There are unlimited varieties and designs of wedding cards available with the printers. The cards are available in art card, fancy cards, velvet, leather and plastic. Leather cards are the most expensive one while art cards have lowest price. The choice of cards differs from customer to customer. "Some customers want cheap cards because they think it is a formality to invite relatives on the wedding, but a majority enjoys this event and spends a large amount on cards," said Rashid Khan, worker at a card shop. Those with a bit of extra money spend much more on cards and want a unique card. Some times people bring their own design, which costs a lot, said Mr Khan. There are certain manufacturers, who normally introduce their own designs and spread them in the market. Every manufacturer has at least 500 designs. "There is no concept of copyright in wedding card designs," said Ghiasuddin, of a block printers. "Whenever a design clicks in the market, the other players prepare its copy on second day." The wedding card manufacturers use imported material in cards, and the art card, fancy card and colours are imported usually from China. These manufacturers use offset printing, foil printing and screen-printing in preparing wedding cards. The format of wedding cards is fixed in some communities. For example Bohris and Memons use only white coloured cards.  Christians and Hindus communities also use the same designs as the Muslims, but the contents change according to custom.
