SC directs Arid varsity VC to resign

ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Thursday advised Vice-Chancellor Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Khan to resign himself because if the court passes a judgment on merit then he would have to surrender the salaries that he got after the extensions. A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and also comprised Justice Tariq Parvez hearing the case of giving fourth extension to VC Arid University said if the court would pass verdict on merit then he would have to surrender his salaries that he obtained after the extensions. The Chief Justice said that there are three judgments of the Supreme Court that instead of giving extension to the officials after their retirement the junior officers should be promoted. Additional Advocate General Punjab on behalf of the Chief Secretary Punjab submitted a report on Khalid Mahmoods extensions. The court inquired what is the justification for holding the top position by a person at the varsity for the last 10 years and getting four extensions. The court had taken suo motu notice of the matter on an application filed by one Ahsan Munir expressing shock over giving extension to an individual who is 70-year-old by relaxing the relevant rules instead of providing opportunity to a younger person in his place. Khalid Mahmood Khan is serving his fourth extension, which had been given to him in violation of the universitys charter. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university in 2001 during the government of Pervez Musharraf because he was a close relative of the then Petroleum Minister Naurez Shakoor. His last extension that comes to an end in 2012 was granted by the caretaker government of Mohammadmian Soomro. The university is mandated to produce high-quality agricultural scientists and to form an organised scientific infrastructure for teaching and research for the development of dry land regions of the country. The institution was upgraded to the level of the university in 1994 from the earlier Barani Agricultural College, Rawalpindi.
