PM rules out fresh dialogue with Taliban

PESHAWAR - Ruling out the possibility of dialogue with Taliban militants, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has made it clear that military operation would be continued till the complete eradication of terrorists and militancy from its roots. Going for dialogue with Taliban militants could prove to be disastrous at this stage, was the reply of the Prime Minister in response to a question during his first-ever chat with media in Governors House here Friday. He said that going for dialogue could derail the efforts and steps initiated against militancy, terrorism and violence. The Prime Minister reminded that in the past, the Government, particularly the NWFP Government, had consumed the maximum time on dialogues and political means but it proved meaningless. He further said that instead of accepting Governments offers, the militants challenged the writ of law and the Government was left with no option but to go for military action. He observed that resuming of dialogue with militants could disappoint all those who were unanimously supporting the military action. At this stage, the whole nation was supporting military action against the militants. Flanked by NWFP Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti, Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Communications Minister Arbab Alamgir Khalil and MNA Asma Alamgir Khalil, the Prime Minister in his brief but comprehensive chat not only highlighted the purpose of his visit to Peshawar but also answered several queries of media. At the very outset of his first-ever press conference in Peshawar, the Prime Minister appreciated the people and the Government of NWFP for looking after the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He said that the Government was desirous of early and honourable repatriation of the IDPs and in this respect was making the maximum efforts for early conclusion of the military action. He said that with the repatriation of IDPs the Government was determined to embark on the reconstruction of the violence affected areas of both NWFP and adjacent tribal region. In response to a question, the Prime Minister reminded that before getting the financial assistance pledged by several foreign countries and international donors, the Federal Government had so far allocated an amount of Rs 50 billion. He said that the purpose of such allocation was to embark on the reconstruction process in the affected areas without any further delay. For this purpose, he said, an organization was being set up and he had attended a briefing in this respect at the Governor House, Peshawar. Referring to the military action in Malakand, the Prime Minister said, We are desirous of its early completion. He said that the achievements of the military action were satisfactory and he was hopeful of early elimination or netting of all terrorists. He also lauded the efforts being made by the Armed Forces in this connection. He said that with the completion of the military action, the Government would go for reconstruction of the affected areas. He also said that on completion of the military operation, the Government would initiate steps for repatriation of IDPs. However, he avoided to give a deadline in this regard. He said that now the people had realized that they were in a war like situation. Answering a question, the Prime Minister said that head money on Baitullah Mehsud had been announced and Taliban commanders from all ranks were killed and arrested from Swat. He said that noose against these militants was being tightened and he was sure of their early netting or elimination. In reaction, he pointed out, Taliban militants embarked on violence throughout the country. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while answering a question said that the Government had no intention to go for war everywhere in the country but at the same time it was fully determined to take action against all those who were challenging the writ of law. In this respect, he said, operation was being focused on those areas where Taliban militants were creating troubles and disturbances. The Prime Minister informed that an amount of more than Rs 24 billion had been allocated for strengthening of the security forces both in NWFP and adjacent tribal regions. He said that the amount could be spent on the capacity building and equipping of the Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary and NWFP Police. He said that the amount could be released in four equal instalments of Rs six billion in a period of two years. In response to a question, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that efforts were under way for early convening of the meeting of National Finance Commission (NFC) and Council of Common Interests (CCI) for resolving the financial and resources matters amongst the federating units. He said that issue of NWFPs hydel net profit would also be tackled in the NFC and CCI meetings.
