ISLAMABAD Taking strong exception to the current NAB Chairman, Naveed Ahsans continuous holding of his position despite Supreme Courts order, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry termed it as a sheer disrespect, on part of the Government, of the verdict of 17-member bench of the apex court. The Chief Justice, who headed a three-member bench, was hearing the Bank of Punjab (BoP) case here on Thursday. Justice Ijaz Chaudhry and Justice Ghulam Rabbani were the other judges of the bench, which observed that some influential people were playing double game with the court in implementing its orders. During the course of proceedings, the chief justice remarked, NAB is a national organisation not a Backwater-like private firm. The CJ given aforesaid remarks when Khawaja Haris, the counsel of BoP told the court that around Rs 8 billion has been recovered in the fraud case so far, adding that the NAB is cutting Rs 200 million in term of its commission. It is said that NAB was not fulfilling its duties professionally. If some officials are caught in negligence while implementing the court order they will be sent behind the bars, the court intended. The court also asked the NAB to submit a list of the rules and regulations before the court under which plea-bargaining was finalised between the parties, the NAB and owners of Haris Steel Mills. How, you can make the plea-bargaining while the matter is being proceeded in the apex court, the CJ asked from the Deputy Prosecutor NAB. The whole responsibility falls to the Chairman NAB; the court observed. Under which law the chairman exceeded his authority, the court questioned. Then, the apex court asked Khawaja Haris that he should informed the Law Ministry because it deals with the NAB. Haris informed the court that he did not write the letter to the Law Minister because he (Babar Awan) himself was facing bribery charges in this case. However, Haris told the court that he had written many letters to the NAB officials but they didnt reply any one of the letters. Besides, he added that the Punjab government had some reservations that an out of court deal might be struck between the NAB officials and the accused in the BoP fraud case. During the hearing, the Chief Justice repeatedly warned of action against the NAB officials who ignored the Supreme Courts orders. Any one who tried to violate the courts orders or tried to make fun of the justice would be sent behind bars. Meanwhile, the lawyer of Seth Yaqoob, Dr. Basit informed the court that the NAB had ignored the courts orders regarding the release of Seth Yakoobs two sons. At this point, the court directed the NAB to release Yaqoobs sons as he had paid the instalment of the said money to the NAB. Meanwhile, the court adjourned the hearing till today (Friday).
