Transporters not ready to reduce fares

KARACHI - Transporters in the metropolis seem reluctant to reduce fares despite huge cut in the prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).According to details Sindh Transport Department has not even bother to take decision even the transport departments of other provinces had notified reduction in transport fare after massive reduction in CNG prices. The transporters in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces have already reduced the public transport fares but the transporters in Sindh have blamed the provincial transport department for not issuing notification in this regard. In Karachi, almost 90 per cent of buses, minibuses and coaches run on CNG; however, they charge fare from commuters on the basis of diesel consumption. Despite the media’s repeatedly highlighted this injustice with the commuters, the government is yet to take any action against the bothering public transporters despite passage of many months. On the other hand, transporters in Sindh are using different excuses and reasoning to avoid reduction in the fears of public transport.A transporter association leader said that not only the CNG, they had several other expenditures in terms of maintenance and taxes. On the other side, Irshad Bukhari, president of Karachi Transport Ittehad, as usual putting the blame on the government and said, “We are not authorised to fix transport fares in accordance with fuel cost.”He said that government was responsible of fixing the rate and transporters were ready to reduce fares but it was necessary that the government should introduce some mechanism.Karachi commuters have demanded the government to announce immediate cut in fares of buses and minibuses, besides ending high-fare status of coaches and keep their fares at par with the fares of other minibuses.
