NA panel for extending tariff after July 12

ISLAMABAD - National Assembly Standing Committee on Textile has recommended the Government to extend 15 percent Regulatory Duty on the yarn export for indefinite period after July 12 to save the Textile Value Added Sector. The NA body, which met with M Akram Ansari in the chair, recommended while discussing the current alarming situation of Textile Industry. Federal Minister for Textile Industry Rana Muhammad Farooque Saeed Khan informed the Committee that imposition of 15 percent RD on yarn export has put good impact in the stabilisation of yarn prices in domestic market. He said that it would be continued till July 12, 2010. On this the members asked the Minister to keep on the duty to ensure availability of yarn for the local industry as the international market would see a shortage of yarn by 21pc during the next year. The Committee also recommended calling on the presidents of all the major banks of the country to sought help for the sick units of the textile industry. The Committee also took strong reaction against APTMAs statement regarding Textile Minister accusing him for bribes and demands from the Association. They said that APTMA had not only labelled allegations on the Minister but has also insulted the whole parliamentarians. Earlier, Minister for Textile Industry apprised the Committee that he had invited the representatives of APTMA who called on him on 19th May 2010 and presented their problems. APTMAs office-bearers were of the view that Value Added Yarn be excluded from the RD and the rate of the duty should be lowered. The Minister further informed that he had also called Value Added Sector and impressed upon them the need to arrive at a mutually agreed policy stance. A final agreement to this effect among all the stakeholders will be inked today, he hoped.
