220 IDPs registered in City

LAHORE - City police have registered 220 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have arrived here in the City during the last few days. The police have also been directed to keep an eye on their activities besides maintaining their complete record. The IDPs who have reached the City belonged to Dir and Swat areas and are living with their relatives. CCPO Lahore has issued new guidelines to superintendents police (SPs), supervisory police officers (SPOs) and station house officers (SHOs) with respect to the IDPs arriving here in the City. The main worry of the police top brass is to ascertain whether or not the people arriving in the City are genuine IDPs. It is learnt that the number of IDPs in the City might be around 1,000 with only 220 registered with the police department so far. About the displaced people who are already in the City, the SHOs are also being asked to collect particulars about the number of the IDPs, their names, ages, and their relationships with their hosts. The police are focusing especially on the young IDPs with a view to determine whether they are genuinely affected persons to minimise the possibility of miscreants entering the City in the guise of IDPs. The areas where the IDPs are staying include Greentown, Township, Bund Road near Shafiq Abad, Fardaus Market, Walton Road, Shahdara and Baghbanpura. The police officials visited the residences at which these displaced people are staying and asked the local hosts to submit surety bonds according to which they would be responsible if the IDPs were found in any illegal activity. The SHOs have been directed to remain alert in the areas where the IDPs are settled. The plainclothes policemen have been separately assigned duties to keep the IDPs under observation till their stay in the City and remain in touch with the officials of police stations concerned in this regard. It is learnt reliably that from the security point of view, the police and other law enforcing agencies are keeping very close eye on these new entrants. In addition to police, other agencies also grill these people to ascertain if the are genuine IDPs and not miscreants fleeing the war zones. Reliable sources said that two families came from Swat a few days back residing in the house of their relative Fazale Rabbi in Gulbehar Colony, have decided to go back after they found the attitude of law enforcing agencies quite hostile. Fazale Rabbi, 60, was hosting at least 20 IDPs at his residence despite poor sources of income. When contacted, CCPO Lahore Pervez Rathore said that police were given instructions to get surety bonds from the local citizens hosting the IDPs as a security measure. He said the police are strictly directed not to harass the IDPs and behave politely with them. He said the purpose to keep an eye on the IDPs was to stop possible arrival of the suspects in provincial capital.
