Breast cancer awareness drive need of hour: Odho

LAHORE - Atiqa Odho, ambassador of breast cancer awareness campaign in Pakistan has said that the breast cancer is major cause of death among women especially in Asia and it is need of the hour that we should raise awareness about this curse. She expressed these views while speaking at a ceremony held at the GC University on Friday to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness Day (The Pink Day) in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC). Atiqa Odho was also guest speaker while a special lecture was delivered by SKMCH&RC doctor about the breast cancer its causes and symptoms. Emphasising the need of earlier detection and better treatment, Atiqa Odho said women usually go to hospitals when they were at the last stage of the disease. She showed her firm commitment to educate all women of Pakistan about the breast cancer, its symptoms, prevention and treatment. Giving answers to the questions of the students, she urged them to work voluntarily in their families to raise awareness about the disease among their mothers, cousins and aunts and so on. She advised the students to go under regular screening for breast cancer after every six months after the age 26. Later, talking to journalists and the universitys senior female faculty members, Atiqa Odho appreciated the confidence and knowledge level of the universitys female students. She also appreciated the response of the university students towards the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and termed it remarkable. Earlier, SKMCH Doctor Kalsum, a fellow in medical oncology gave a detailed presentation about the symptoms, self-examination methods, screening, staging, prevention and treatment of the breast cancer. Talking to Atiqa Odho and their teachers, a large number of students showed their willingness to work as volunteers to raise awareness among the women about the diseases.
