LeJ leaders entry in Islamabad banned

ISLAMABAD The local authorities on Wednesday barred the entry of Malik Ishaq, leader of proscribed outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), in Federal Capital under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960 pre-empting his participation in Isthekam-e-Pakistan & Shuhda-e-Islam Conference to be held here on Thursday (today). An official of the Islamabad Capital territory Administration (ICTA) informed on condition of anonymity that entry of Malik Ishaq was banned in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) for seven days. He further said that action was taken under Section 5 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance1960. The Administration has taken this step as a preventive measure as Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, the new nomenclature of banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), is organizing Isthekam-e-Pakistan & Shuhda-e-Islam Conference today in the capital, official sources said. The conference is being organised on the eve of death anniversary of Moulana Azam Tariq, former MNA and leader of banned SSP who was murdered by unknown persons in the outskirts of the capital during the last Musharraf regime. Moulana Mohammad Ahmed Ludhianvi, another leader of the same banned organisation, will be the key speaker on the occasion. Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat had earlier announced to hold the conference at Parade Ground near Parliament House, however, the Administration did not allow them and later the venue was changed at Hockey Stadium, Aabpara Market located adjacent to Lal Masjid. Earlier, authorities in District Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab had placed Malik Ishaq, the operational chief of LeJ, under house arrest in the last week of September for a period of ten days to pre-empt increase in sectarian violence following his fiery speeches against the Shia community. Ishaq was detained on the directions of provincial government a day after 29 Shias were killed in Mastung during an attack. However, some media reports indicate that a contingent of police has been deputed outside the house of Malik Ishaq only just to provide him security as he has visited various places of Southern Punjab during his detention period. Ishaq was released on bail in the third week of July from Kot Lakhpat jail after living nearly 14 years behind bars over his alleged role in numerous sectarian murders and for plotting an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore during 2009. The courts acquitted Ishaq in 34 of the 44 cases against him, involving the killing of around 100 people, and granted him bail in the remaining 10 cases due to presence of poor lack of evidence. Soon after his release, Ishaq started touring various cities of Southern Punjab to address the activists of LeJ, a wing of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, and SSP as well. Recently, the activist of both of these outfits clashed with the Shia community in District Muzaffargarh of Punjab resulting in at least two deaths and ten injuries when they were welcoming the entourage of Malik Ishaq during his visit of the area.
