PPP, PDM come closer to reunion against govt

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) yesterday came closer to reunion against the PTI-led government as the opposition has finalised the anti-government campaign.

Yesterday, an important meeting of the opposition parties - chaired by former Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition Yousuf Raza Gillani - was held to discuss the future strategy against the government.

Parliamentary leaders of all opposition parties in the Senate including the PDM attended the meeting.

Senator Sherry Rehman, Raza Rabbani, Farooq Naik, Sadia Abbasi, Mushahid Hussain, Irfan Siddiqui participated in the meeting.

Senator Muhammad Akram, Tahir Bizenjo, Shamim Afridi, Rana Maqbool and other members also attended the meeting. The meeting considered the joint strategy of the opposition. PPP leaders told The Nation that the reunion with the PDM was a real possibility. “Things are moving in the right direction. The opposition is united against the government,” a top PPP leader said.

PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari said the government had pushed the people to the limits.

“There is no room for this government to remain in power. They will go as a result of the (February 27) long march,” he contended.

Yesterday, PML-N President and Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif said that the government of PTI should be worried over its own acts.

He said that the country was facing severe level of corruption and deteriorating economy.  PPP co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari met the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) leadership to discuss the “political situation.” Meanwhile, cracks started appearing in the alliance between PTI and the Balochistan Awami Party as the coalition partner expressed reservations over the attitude of the federal government.
