'Military action forced Baloch to leave homes'

LAHORE - Speakers at seminar here Monday said that the burning issue of Balochistan was purely political and constitutional which was suppressed in the past by civilian and military dictators. They were speaking at a joint discussion titled Balochistan Problem and its Solution held here at the Hameed Nizami Hall. PML-N central leader Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Hafiz Hussain Ahmad, JUI (F) secretary general senator Abdul Ghafoor Haidari, secretary general Jamhoori Watan Party Abdul Rauf Khan Sasooli and Brigadier (r) Aslam Ghuman also spoke on the occasion. Senator Abdul Ghafoor said that so far four military operations have been launched in Balochistan which resulted the flight of thousands of Baloch people, including their leaders, from their homes. The last brutal operation was launched by military dictator, General (r) Musharraf against Nawab Akbar Bugti despite the fact that the issue could be resolved amicably through the efforts of a committee comprising PML-Q Secretary General, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, and PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. Addressing the meeting Brigadier (r) Aslam Ghuman said once Balochistan was the most peaceful province of Pakistan. He said Balochistan is rich in mineral resources, especially natural gas and precious metals, and different varieties of fruits but its people had been deliberately deprived of benefiting from these resources, which was undoubtedly their constitutional rights. He further said our current leadership would have to solve this issue by minimising the differences among the people of Balochistan and those of the Punjab, NWFP and Sindh provinces and by providing them basic rights at grass root level. Our leaders will have to put aside their personal interests and work on war footing to counter the international conspiracy, hatched by the US, Israel and India, against the sovereignty of Pakistan by destabilising Balochistan, he added. Jamhoori Watan Party leader Abdul Rauf Khan Sasooli said in 1947 the leaders and people of Balochistan cast their vote in favour of Pakistan because of unbreakable bonds of religion, culture, heritage and traditions with the people of other three provinces. He said if govt was sincere in solving Balochistan issue, it would have to provide equal rights to the people of this backward province in all walks of national life. In his address Hafiz Hussain Ahmad said Nawab Akbar Bugti had agreed to hold dialogue with the representatives of the then government. He said that Ch Shujat Hussain announced on the floor of the House that the issue was settled down through their discussion with Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and final report was sent to Musharraf. But General (r) Musharraf resorted to the use of force and killed the most popular Baloch in a military action. One can still see the intelligence agencies running the government in Balochistan, Hafiz Hussain told, adding the current PPP regime is making its foreign policies at the behest of America, which is the main hurdle in restoring peace in Balochistan. PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafiq said Nawab Akbar Bugti wanted dialogue till his tragic murder but Musharraf responded with brutality and gave message to other leaders not to trust in government and its representatives. He said the core issue of Balochistan was now part of a great game so it should be the first obligation of the current government to take rapid steps in mutual understanding with all parties to solve the issue. He demanded the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take sue motto action against General (r) Musharraf and all military and civilian leaders who played role in forging the brutal military operation in Balochistan. This was obligatory on the incumbent Parliament to withdraw from the so-called US-led war on terrorism, change its foreign policies and solve its internal problems, including the main issue of Balochistan, otherwise it would lose its credibility, Saad concluded.
