Victim family waiting for justice

LAHORE - The family of an under trial prisoner, who died in Camp Jail due to alleged torture of jail officials as well as their negligence in providing timely medical treatment to the inmate, is impatiently waiting for the final decision of District and Sessions Court. District and Sessions Judge Sohail Nasir had taken serious notice in this regard on a news item that appeared on a private TV channel about the Sajids death in Camp Jail. The judge had ordered different responsible officials to record their statements before the court so that reasons behind Sajids death could be ascertained for awarding punishment to the responsible officials. The deceaseds father, Nawaz, had also filed a petition through a Aftab Ahmad Bajwa advocate for registration of a criminal case against the jail officials including Jail Superintendent Gulzar Butt whose alleged torture on Sajid caused his death on October 18, 2010. Nawaz contended in his petition that magistrate had directed the superintendent twice to conduct medical examination of his son but he did not comply with the court orders. He said even a show-cause notice was also served on the Camp Jail superintendent. The father said an application was also submitted to the SHO Shadman but he also refused to entertain the application. After this he contacted DIG operations, who marked the application to SP Model Town. He alleged his son was tortured brutally under the nose of jail authorities. Last Thursday Deputy Superintendent Camp Jail Mehmood Fakhri and officials concerned of Mayo Hospital Forensic Department also appeared before the court and recorded their statements respectively before Additional and District Judge Abdul Waheed Khan after the transfer of Judge Sohail Nasir who made tremendous progress by recording and summoning different officials required for the completion of the inquiry into Sajids death.
