LAHORE - The Punjab Vocational Training Council in collaboration with the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports, Archaeology and Tourism (YASAT) held an experience sharing and lesson learnt workshop on Tuesday as part of the Building Young Futures (BYF), a project supported by Barclays Bank & Unicef.
This was the second such event organised by the PVTC in a week.
Mr Sajid Naseer Khan, Managing Director PVTC, Ms Shagufta H Bhatti, Child Protection Specialist & Mr M Muhammad Yasin from UNICEF, Mrs Nabeela Khan, Project Manager, from YASAT, HODs of PVTC & Principals of VTIs and graduates from Vocational Training Institutes of selected districts of Punjab were among the participants.
The PVTC is the largest vocational training organization in Pakistan, with over 223 Vocational Training Institutes (VTI) functioning across the province. Over 337,000 trainees have graduated from their system, of which 73 per cent are gainfully employed in different industries. ‘On the job training’ or work placements forms an integral part of PVTC training courses.
The objective of the workshop was to share lessons learned during the implementation of the project and prepare recommendations for the government for its future projects.
Key recommendations included strengthening linkages for females with micro finance institutions as the girls are more inclined to start their own businesses as opposed to boys; strengthening PVTC and other vocational training institutes to include illiterate trainees as part of the programme as opposed to project based approach; replication of PVTC model which includes government certified training courses for illiterate adolescents including life skills.
