22 MPs finalised for electoral reforms committee

ISLAMABAD  - Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah and State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad in consultation with other parliamentary parties sitting on treasury and opposition benches furnished the list of 22 members, to be part of the parliamentary committee on electoral reforms, to the speaker National Assembly.
Sources aware of the development on this front informed that some of the parties in the National Assembly have no representation in the upper house of the parliament so these parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, had given their nominations from the lower house of the parliament.
More or less the nominations already given by the parties were repeated with little alteration and keeping in view the compulsion to have one-third of the representation in the body from upper house of the parliament, a source said and added that there are some parties which have only representation in the upper house alone so to accommodate these parties some changes in the already given lists of members by various parties is expected.
Sources further said that the speaker National Assembly has also written a letter to chairman Senate to forward 11 members from the upper house to be part of the electoral reforms body by 24th of this month so that the committee could initiate its work forthwith.
Sources aware of the developments taking place on this front informed that the government wanted to put the committee on ground with immediate effect to create a hurdle in the launch of the planned protest march of PTI for electoral reforms on August 14.
Previously Chairman Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari had raised objection on the composition of the committee, saying that there was no mention about the representation of senate in the body despite the fact that the earlier nominations contained representation from the upper house of the parliament as almost all the major parties had given the names of their senators in the proposed body.
Realising the lacunae the speaker National Assembly rushed to rectify it by holding meeting with the chairman senate wherein the composition of the committee was redefined with one-third members from the upper house of the parliament.
Sources in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) said that the party would going to repeat the nominations they had already given with two members, Ishaq Dar and Raja Zafarul Haq, would likely be taken from upper house of the parliament while rest of the five members including Zahid Hamid, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Tariq Fazl Chaudhry, Anosha Rehman and Mohammad Bashir Ahmad Virk would be taken from the national assembly.
The PTI has repeated their three members, all taken from National Assembly because the party has no representation in upper house, to be part of the committee. Dr Shireen Mazari, Dr Arif Alvi and Shafqat Mahmood would be included in the list.
MQM’s Dr Farooq Sattar and SA Iqbal Qadri would be part of the committee from National Assembly while Col (Retd) Tahir Mashadi would be taken from the upper house.
Independent MNA Ghazi Ghulab Jamal, Senator Israr Ullah Zahri of BNP (Awami) ANP’s Senator Haji Adeel, MNA Kishwar and Senator Talha Mahmood would represent JUI-F, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao from QWP, Ejazul Haq from PML-Z, Sh Rasheed will represent Awami Muslim League while PML-Q has nominated Tariq Bashir Cheema to be part of the committee.  Likewise MNA Sahibzada Tariq Ullah will represent JI.
