Restoration work of Nishtar Park finally starts

KARACHI - After a gap of 40 years, the fate of historical ground Nishtar Park is going to be changed as Jamshed Town administration has started its renovation and development work, The Nation has learnt on Saturday. The largest centre for political rallies and religious gatherings in Karachi, Nishtar Park, was being neglect for the last several decades due to unknown reasons. But now the development work has been started and City Nazim Mustafa Kamal will lay the foundation stone of its renovation and development work on December 28, 2008 (today). The spokesman of the town administration said that surveillance cameras would also be installed around the Nishtar Park keeping in view the security importance of the gatherings which are regularly held inside the park. It may be noted that Nishtar Park, earlier presented a deserted look due to authorities negligence and lack of funds. Residents of Soldier Bazar, where the park is located, complained many times for bringing the improvement of park and approached high ups of City government but all their efforts failed at that time. But now they expressed satisfaction on the beginning of development and renovation work in Nishtar Park which spread on 450 acres. The Jamshed Town administration is planting trees and grass, installing swings and making jogging track in the park. Muhammad Afzal, who lives close by the park since long and chairman Eid Gha Committee Nishtar Park, recalled the historic moments of the park. He said legendary politicians including the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Maulana Bhashani, Shaikh Mujeebur Rehman, Nawaz Sharif, Altaf Hussain, Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, Maulana Noorani, and other legendry politicians had all been to Nishtar Park. Many of them started their political careers from this park. Players like Javed Miandad, Hanif Muhammad and others have also played at Nishtar Park. National level football and basketball competitions have also been organised here, which later aboliashed due to pathetic condition of the ground but now the area people hoped that sporting activities would also be started again after the development work was comleted. Afzal expressed satisfaction on the renovation and development work carried out by the town administration and started saving this historic place of the metropolis.
