City Govt building in dilapidated condition

KARACHI - The CDGK-owned Liaquatabad Super Market building is in dilapidated condition due to the lethargic attitude of town administration as well as the City government. The nine-storey building has a huge capacity for establishing offices to reduce the pressure of CDGK head office at Civic Centre, where people thronged for the solution of their problems, whereas parking at the centre has become a hectic problem for the visitors as well as for the City government administration. The Super Market building was built in 1976 on the directives of former premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto but various floors of the building including dozens of big halls, shops and stalls are lying vacant since decades. After establishing of the CDGK in 2001, the defunct KMC, KDA and KWSB had been merged and various departments of Sindh government had also been devolved in the local government. The decision to this effect has increased the capacity, working power and working force of the City government. The CDGK head office has been established in Hasan Square at Civic Centre, where thousands of CDGK, KBCA, LDA employees and thousands of citizens visit for the solution their problems which is causing congestion at the premises. Besides this, the parking has become a worst problem at Civic Centre. Various important offices and buildings of the CDGK are not being used properly due to which not only the place is being wasted, but the working conditions and environment is also suffering. In the basement of the building, car parking facility is available along with 129 stalls for commercial purposes. Around 214 stalls and 34 shops belonging to the different business segments are functioning successfully at the first floor. The state department of CDGK and office of KWSB are functioning at the Hall No 2 of the first floor. At second floor Professor Karar Hussain Library is situated and running successfully under the auspices of Liaquatabad Town Administration. Although, floors 3 to 9 have been lying vacant. It may be noted that after establishing the CDGK around 8 years ago, approximately all offices of defunct KMC had been shifted to the newly formed CDGK head office at Civic Centre. The Civic Centre was previously built only for KDA. The proper use of Liaquatabad Super Market would not only give a great relieve to the increasing pressure of the congestion, parking and other problems, but also save the precious Liaquatabad Super Market building. At least those departments could be shifted here which are not directly related to the public dealings, a group of CDGK employees said. The Liaquatabad Town Administration when contacted told The Nation that basically the town administration has nothing to do with the Liaquatabad Super Market building because it is the property of CDGK. They said that town administration has sent a communiqu_ to CDGK about Liaquatabad Super Market for its usage, and City govt is looking into the matter. Sources in the City government said that CDGK had earlier invited expression of interest for the proper usage of the building, but the process lingered on.
