For the love of a swim

Lahore is constantly developing. It has been under government’s radar for last many years. As some of areas like construction of roads and commuting are getting special attention, some are being highly ignored. Swimming is a sport which is healthy and keeps you fresh in summers, but unfortunately most of the Lahore enjoys this sport in Canal. Government and authorities like PHA promised many times but so far they are unable to provide the alternative source for the swimmers.

LDA complex at Samanbad used to be the only general public swimming pool in Lahore few years ago. With a passage of time the number has increased, yet they are not enough for all those who love to swim. Dha swimming pool, the Model Town Club and the Lahore Gymkhana, have the facility of swimming pools exclusively for their members. However, there are so many people who have learnt the art of swimming at the canal because they cannot afford expensive pools. The Punjab government spent money on the Model Town Club pool, but handed it over to the club on completion, afterwards, they increased the prices due to which people cannot afford it. A swimming pool at the Iqbal Parks Sports Complex was another place for the general public but it has not been operative since the mid-1990s. The Punjab sports board which has been running the pool has no interest in it and does not work on it and the pool at the Iqbal Park had been affected badly .It should be open for the general public so it could benefit general public.

The Punjab University has also a swimming pool available for men, however, the pool is working but the facility is only for the students and university faculty members.

The other educational institutions where swimming pools are available are the King Edward Medical College, Kinnaird College and Aitcheson College. The Government College’s pool is no more in working condition. The Shapes Club is one of the private organizations where swimming is possible throughout the year. The club is charging Rs 9600 and it is available for everyone. The ambassador hotel is also a place where swimming is possible for everyone and it charges are Rs 16,000 per month.

Everyone living in Lahore cannot afford the expensive swimming pools, as this natural swimming pool (canal) is free for the entire Lahore, summer stricken people come here and enjoy. Families can be seen here sitting on the bank of canal. Young boys enjoy the place by swimming and diving in the water from the bridge constructed on canal. However, water of the canal is not healthy but still people come here   to enjoy themselves especially in the months of June and July. With the ongoing condition of electricity, people don’t have any other option but to go to canal and beat the heat. If the government sets up swimming pools or tube-wells for the public at low costs, general public can have hygienic entertainment.

The government should construct swimming pools for the youngsters and the prices should be reasonable so that everyone should afford it easily.

Experts believe that the plan will have a positive impact on the lifestyle of the citizens who have been deprived of any such facility for a long time.

Under the proposed plan, the government will stop the flow of water for a few weeks to properly clean the basin of the Canal and design it to avoid any accidents.

Stairs would be built in the Canal at different points with boards set up on sides mentioning the Canal’s depth to prohibit children from swimming in some places

On Sunday, two civil police man raided near BRB Canal, people were swimming when they tried to catch them but they escaped. The CDGL, which earlier banned bath in the Lahore Canal under section 144, had now imposed ban only at seven designated points of the canal, an official said. The seven points are: Khaira Bridge to VR Bridge, Harbanspura underpass to 1000ft towards The Mall, Dharampura underpass to 1,000ft towards The Mall, Jail Road underpass to 1000ft towards The Mall Road underpass, Ferozepur Road underpass to 1000ft toward The Mall, Doctors Hospital to 1,000ft to Lahore Bridge.

A common source of the infection is increased in which moisture traps in the ear while swimming in the canals.  When water is trapped in the ear, bacteria that normally inhabit the skin can cause infection of the ear.

The CDGL has been working on establishing 10 picnic spots across the city to provide entertainment facilities to the citizens. Some of the spots will be set up close to the Canal in Jallo adding to the beauty and facility of the other swimming project.
