Sacked FBR officials trying to fit into new set-up

ISLAMABAD - The sacked officials of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) are putting in their best efforts to fit into the newly formed administrative set-up of FBR, credible sources told 'The Nation' wishing anonymity. Some prominent post-holders of Regional Tax Office (RTO) mentioned that former top brass of FBR including close associates of former Chairman are using different tactics to continue their "Reign" in FBR. "They are all set-up to convince the newly arrived Chairman of FBR that they are the best available option on the basis of their so called performance", an official said. Recently, the government sacked the former Chairman FBR and five members from Private sector who were considered to be his close associates that comprise Member Tax Policy and Reforms, Member Fiscal Research, Member Information Management, Member Facilitation and Direct Education, and Member Audit. "The former Chairman assigned some key posts to his close friends and relatives on the basis of his close ties with them, ignoring merit and relevant experience", said a senior officer working in RTO. The officials categorically criticised the misconduct and mismanagement of one of the very controversial member who also happens to be the close relative of former Chairman. They stated that Member Audit who has played vital role in bringing about all the cosmetic changes in FBR failed to achieve any worth mentioning task during his entire tenure. The role of former Member Audit was highly resented among rank and file of FBR. "He managed to get a prominent post in FBR on the basis of his kinship with former Chairman", stated another senior tax officer. "His presence was nothing but a ruthless account of sheer wastage of money and resources", he added.   The Nation learnt that former chief of FBR would give special heed to the advices of former members from private sector in general and Member Audit in particular.  "It was the result of his novel advices that the blunders like tax administrative reforms and lavish spending of money were committed by FBR", the officers revealed. In addition, the officers held that the said member was famous for spending heavy amount of money at the expense of the department on his private tours. The infamous Member Audit was also known for misbehaving with his subordinates and insulting them in a very discourteous manner. It is also learnt that the officers of the regular Cadre of FBR were completely marginalized except one regular officer who also was close relative of former Chairman. Moreover, the regular officers were offered very few salaries compared to heavy salaries of more than 300,000 rupees to 400,000 rupees given to the members of private sectors who neither had the relevant experience nor expertise to carry on the assigned jobs. "The officers of regular cadre who have been working in the department for decades could do the administrative jobs very efficiently instead of hiring a cosmetic set-up from private sector", mentioned a source. In addition, another authentic source told this scribe, "At present, the Member Audit is asking the newly arrived Chairman to give him time for a detailed presentation about his performance. But chairman has not paid any heed to his requests". It is pertinent to note that the former management of FBR has severely been criticised by some  advisors owing to the lavish spending of resources on useless tasks. The officials have demanded of the government to initiate strict action against the former chairman and his close allies who were responsible for spending huge amount of public's money for their personal interests. "They must be sued for what they did to the nation," they suggested.
