Economic team briefs PM on food, fuel prices

PM directs ‘all necessary measures’ to bring down food prices

ISLAMABAD   -  Prime Minister Imran Khan Monday directed the authorities concerned to take all necessary measures to bring down the prices of essential commodities to give maximum relief to common man.

The PM issued these directives while chairing a meeting to review the overall economic situation in the country. The Prime Minister said, like our exemplary response to COVID-19 pandemic, we are working hard to mitigate negative impacts of international inflation, especially in petroleum products and food items. Stabilising macroeconomic indicators in the country is government’s top priority to spur economic growth, he added.

Earlier, the Prime Minister was briefed about the overall economic situation in the country by his economic team. He was also apprised of inflationary trends in the international commodity market and petroleum prices.

Earlier, the PM while chairing a high-level meeting on the Panagah programme said the government is working to transform Panahgahs into a self-sustaining social welfare project where the poorest of the poor could avail all civic amenities under one roof.

Special arrangements are being made to improve upon living standards in Panahgahs, especially in the winter season, he added.

The Prime Minister approved the proposal of the Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety (PASS) Division for the upgradation of Panahgahs into centres of excellence.

Earlier, the PM was briefed on the contours of proposed programme for commodity subsidies for the poor and final plan for the up gradation of Panahgahs.

He directed the authorities concerned to take all necessary measures to provide quality housing facilities to the marginalised segments of society. He also directed to maintain proper hygiene standards and better healthcare facilities in Panahgahs.

The meeting was attended by Advisor on Finance Shaukat Fayyaz Tarin, SAPM on Poverty Alleviation Dr Sania Nishtar, MD Bait ul Mal Zaheer Abbas Khokhar, PM’s Focal Person on Panahgahs Naseem ur Rehman and senior officers concerned. The meeting on economic situation  was attended by EAD Minister Omar Ayub Khan, Energy Minister Muhammad Hammad Azhar, Industries Minister Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, Information Minister Ch Fawad Hussain, Minister for National Food Security Syed Fakhar Imam, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Advisor on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood, Advisor on Finance Shaukat Tarin, SAPM Dr Shahbaz Gill, Governor State Bank Dr Reza Baqir and senior officers concerned.
